A Lehigh Acres man has been arrested after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing into a tree and patrol car over the weekend in Cape Coral.

On Sunday, at around 2:17 a.m., a Cape Coral Police officer was dispatched to the 2000 block of Santa Barbara Boulevard for a call for service.

According to the police department, while the officer was sitting inside her patrol car with rear emergency lights activated, a man in a red Lexus SUV hit her vehicle from behind. He then started reversing his car.

Once the car was in park, the officer told him to get out and sit on the sidewalk. The officer reported that Viltre Mulet was unsteady on his feet and stumbled from his car to the sidewalk.

When the officer made contact with the driver, later identified as 29-year-old Luis Rene Viltre Mulet, he reportedly had glassy, bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath.

Just before the crash, the police department received a call from a witness who said a red Lexus SUV struck a tree several times.

Viltre Mulet was transported to the Lee County Jail.

He’s being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, DUI with property damage and hit-and-run.
