Man kills his wife and son at home, then himself

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) – A man fatally shot his wife and son and critically wounded his daughter before taking his own life at a Northern California home on New Year’s Day, police said Friday.

The man was in his 50s and his two children were in their 30s, Modesto police Sgt. Mark Weiglein told the Modesto Bee (http://bit.ly/1DaO1BS ). All four apparently lived at the home in this city of 200,000 people about 70 miles southeast of Sacramento and were the only ones there during the shooting.

Police responded to the residence after a man called 911, saying he had killed his family. They found the man, his wife and his son dead, but his daughter still alive. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Investigators have not established a motive for the murder-suicide.

“Neighbors didn’t have any indication anything was wrong,” Weiglein told the Bee.

The family members’ names have not been released.
