Man arrested in violent Lee County home invasion walks free

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- A 21-year-old arrested for a violent home robbery is now a free man.

David Monestime spent more than a month in jail charged in a home invasion at the Royal Tee Golf Club community in late March. The State Attorney’s Office has now dropped all charges against Monestime because of a lack of evidence.

WINK News spoke exclusively with the victims when it first happened.

“The guy was kicking away at me, punching and slashing. The one guy I was fighting, had a knife and he was slashing and trying to stick me with the knife.”

The victim described how four men pushed their way into his home. He said at least two of the suspects had a gun and they wanted money.

“The two guys with the guns ran by us and went in the house. I looked and they knocked my wife down right by the door here.”

The man and wife escaped and ran to a neighbor’s home to call police.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says they originally arrested Monestime based on probable cause.

WINK News spoke with the victims again Monday. They declined to be on camera but say they feel that law enforcement could have done more with this case.

The victims add every night is a sleepless one knowing the men who tried to kill them are still on the run.

LCSO says they are still looking for the suspects.
