Fort Myers gives green light to new auto junkyard

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A controversial construction project in Fort Myers was approved Tuesday night.

Garden Street Iron and Metal Recycling center on Metro Parkway and Hanson Street wants to add a self-serving auto parts junkyard. However, one city ordinance doesn’t allow them to expand while another ordinance does.

The owner of the new auto yard says this will do nothing but do good things for the city and add jobs.

“We are looking at about 20-25 jobs once we have construction done. We will be up and running. This is just another expansion or add on to our business that we already have,” said Robert Weber.

Attorneys representing the opposition claim that it is not legal for the City of Fort Myers to allow this junkyard to expand and add an auto parts yard.

This case may now go before a circuit judge to decide whether it is actually legal for the city to allow this new auto yard to be built.

Weber tells WINK News construction could take about a year.
