Port Charlotte home destroyed after fire

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – A Port Charlotte family hopes to able to move back into their home that was damaged Thursday night in a fire.

WINK News was at the home Friday morning as the Carlson family came back to see what’s left of their house.

Thursday night, Dale Carlson and his son say they were working to fixing the lawn mower when the fire sparked.

“We were going to cut our lawn and he was pulling it back out of the way, and I just turned and I heard him scream, and I turned around and there were flames coming up through my knees,” said Carlson.

Carlson, his three children and the family dog were home when the fire started.

“I just grabbed the kids, got the kids all out, and then as soon as I realized we were all out and safe we ran around back to get our dog, because he’s part of the family too.”

The family rents the home and says they hope to be able to move back in. The Red Cross has put the family in a hotel until Sunday, they have also helped with clothes and food.
