NAPLES, Fla. – The Lehigh Senior High School basketball team was reunited on the court Thursday in a match-up game against Golden Gate High School in Naples, but lost 66-68.

The loss against the Golden Gate Titans meant the Lehigh Lightning would not advance to regional finals and came after the teams were tied with less than a minute remaining in the game.

It’s coming down to the wire and Lehigh is on the line…free throw line….its now TiEd

The game was the team’s first following the Lee County School District’s controversial decision to ban nine players from the court for the remainder of the 2015-16 season after a video showing them freestyling explicit and sexually suggestive lyrics surfaced online.

Lehigh vs Golden Gate has started. It’s the first night the team has played together since numerous players were suspended for making a derogatory rap video.

The original ban included all district championship games — a punishment many parents felt was far too severe.

Lee County School District officials reversed their decision Feb. 4 after students expressed their remorse and the school board held a pair of meetings with parents. Parents had agreed with a two-day suspension and were willing to accept a five-day suspension, but concerned their children’s futures could be impacted if not allowed to play.

Thursday was also head coach Dawn McNew’s first game after her suspension in connection with her team’s video was lifted Monday. She said she was incredibly proud of the boys, especially after overcoming adversity this season.
