1 dead in tanker truck crash on Interstate 75

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say the driver of a tanker truck is dead following a crash on Interstate 75 near Sarasota.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports the crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, closing southbound lanes for several hours.

A crash report says the tanker was traveling south when it rear-ended a car. The truck veered onto a grassy shoulder and flipped over. Its driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

FHP says the car’s 16-year-old driver fled the scene. The car was later located at a Sarasota apartment complex, and the driver was located at a Bradenton home around 7 a.m. The driver was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and violating a restriction of a learner license.

It was not clear what caused the crash.
