Lee County teacher among those honored by Gov. Scott

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- A Lee County teacher is one of eight educators honored Tuesday at Gov. Rick Scott’s Shine Awards.

Jo Ellen Stanley, a sixth grade math teacher at Varsity Lakes Middle School in Lehigh Acres, was “recognized as a high impact teacher by the Florida Department of Education for her effective teaching and positive impact on student learning.”

The Shine Award is presented to teachers and administrators in Florida who make significant contributions to the field of education, the governor’s office said.

“I am proud to honor Florida’s incredible teachers who work every day to help students accomplish their goals and get a great education in our state,” Scott said.

The other teachers honored Tuesday were:

  • Susie Barber, Jackson County
  • Tim Brown, Polk County
  • SGM Cynthia Downing, U.S. Army, Polk County
  • Lindsey Hamlin, Jackson County
  • Col. Jeff Kaloostian, U.S. Air Force, Hillsborough County
  • Sgt. Leon O’Connell, U.S. Army, Polk County
  • Lt Col. Shawn Phelps, U.S. Army, Polk County
