Nearly 17 percent of online passwords are ‘123456’

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Nearly 17 percent of online accounts are protected by the simple, easy-to-hack password of “123456,” according to a newly released study.

Four of the 10 most commonly used passwords are six characters or shorter, the study by the security firm Keeper shows.

Many websites have been instituting progressively more complicated rules for passwords to protect user data, but the data from the study shows many more aren’t. Hackers — and hacking software — are capable of cracking accounts in seconds if passwords are weak.
