Driver sought in Lee County hit-and-run crash

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A moped rider suffered minor injuries following a hit-and-run crash Saturday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Kenney Roberts was driving his moped to work on the Midpoint Bridge when a white car slammed into him from behind, he said.

The impact threw him from his moped. When Roberts looked at the car, the driver fled the scene.

“The car was on top of my bike and they started squealing their tires, like they were trying to beat feet and get out of there in a hurry,” he said. “They pulled off and my bike fell over, and they just shot over the bridge.”

Roberts believes the driver crossed the bridge and turned onto Summerlin Road. The car likely has front end damage and blue paint, he said.

“It’s terrible that somebody would do that to another human being,” Roberts said.

Roberts was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with minor scrapes and bruises.

The moped is no longer in working condition. The driver who hit Roberts could face a third-degree felony, the FHP said.

Anyone who sees a vehicle matching Roberts’ description or has any information is asked to call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 239-477-1000.
