FORT MYERS, Fla. A Lee County man was reunited with his dog Friday after nearly a month apart.

Dave Cunningham and his dog Fred were regulars at the Bottom Line on Evans Avenue.

However, Fred ran out the door after a patron one Friday afternoon and was returned to PAWS Lee County, the North Fort Myers-based agency where Cunningham adopted him.

However, the agency said Cunningham hadn’t fulfilled his adoption contract by not updating Fred’s microchip, so they initially refused to return him.

A Naples lawyer volunteered her services and helped Cunningham get his dog back.

While Cunningham is overjoyed to have Fred, he says he will keep him on a leash going forward.
