The wreck —involving a passenger van— happened around 2:57 p.m. on State Road 29 south of Immokalee, which is approximately three to four miles north of Alligator Alley, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. State Road 29 is back open following the crash. One person was taken to the hospital as a trauma alert, according to Immokalee Fire Control. Witnesses say a vehicle attempted to pass the passenger van by travelling in oncoming lanes of traffic, and swerved at the last minute to avoid a head-on collision with a third vehicle. One of the vehicles hit the van, which resulted in the van overturning onto the shoulder of the road. The van was carrying nine passengers, including the driver. All were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. The driver of the third vehicle was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The vehicle that drove into oncoming traffic fled the scene.
