Actor Dustin Diamond, 44, died in Southwest Florida on Monday, his friend confirmed Wednesday with WINK News. Diamond is best known publicly for his role as Screech in the 1990s TV series “Saved by the Bell.”

Diamond died after a three-week fight with cancer.

Friend Dan Block told WINK News the former child star had been staying at a Fort Myers-area hospital before he was discharged and died at a friend’s home in Southwest Florida.

“I just wanted to say thank you to all the medical staff that cared for Dustin,” Block said. “He must have pushed that call button thousands of times because he didn’t like being alone. I’m sure you heard some jokes that you will always remember.”

According to Diamond’s obituary, he had been a resident of Cape Coral since 2018 and also passed away in the city. Block told us Diamond liked living in the area.

Diamond’s girlfriend is among loved ones grieving the actor’s death. Block said she does not plan to speak to news media at this time.

Block says a service for Diamond has not been set as of Wednesday, but a few people said their last goodbyes to him at a funeral parlor.
