Credit: FDOT Florida Highway Patrol says that a failure to reduce speed may have caused an hours-long traffic backup on I-75 in Lee County on Monday afternoon. FHP says that four vehicles, a van, a truck and two cars, were traveling NB on I-75 in Lee County, near the Bonita Beach Road exit around 5 p.m. Both cars and the truck were able to slow down due to the traffic ahead of them traveling at a lower speed. The van did not reduce its speed and hit the back of the truck. That caused the truck to then hit one of the cars and a guardrail. The van veered into the median and hit the cable barrier. Debris from the crash hit the second car. A 12-year-old girl passenger in the van did suffer serious injuries as a result of the crash. She was wearing a seatbelt. All others involved suffered either minor injuries or were not injured at all. The Florida Highway Patrol no longer releases the names of those involved in crashes, citing Marsy’s Law.
