A car crashed into a building in Cape Coral on Friday afternoon.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, an older person driving crashed into a building at 3108 Santa Barbara Boulevard.
Nobody was arrested or injured in the crash, but the building was damaged. Nobody was sitting outside of the building when the crash happened.
One of the restaurants the car hit was closed and one of the owners said if that wasn’t the case, who knows what would’ve happened.
Gregory Torres, one of the part owners of the Mona Lisa Pizzeria in South Cape, wasn’t sure what exactly precipitated the crash.
“Police chase? I don’t know,” Torres said.
Next door to the pizzeria is Cubay Restaurant, sharing the patio the car ran through.
Anibal Ahuerre is one of the owners of Cubay, and he said they were working when they heard a loud noise they thought was thunder. But, when he went outside, he saw what actually happened.
The owner of the plaza, Donald Hinks, shared some thoughts about the crash with WINK News.
“I went there right away and met the people. And they were really nice people, older couple,” said Hinks.
“She, instead of pushing the brake pedal, she was pushing the gas pedal and went on through and then, of course, damaged her car,” said Hinks. “And also damage a lot of the tables, got a lot of concrete tables. Some things took that all out.”
Hinks went on to mention that property damage alone will cost around $20,000 to $30,000. But, keeping what’s really important in mind, Hinks was happy nobody was hurt.
“At least nobody got hurt. That was a big, big thing that we worried about when we heard about it,” said Hinks.
Going forward, the area needs to be cleaned up, and businesses will be reaching out to their insurance to see what they’ll cover.
