Sunday, a group known as Kids Helping Our Veterans showed up at American Legion Post 38 in downtown Fort Myers with a U-Haul full of supplies for any veteran in need.

Things like bottled water, canned nonperishable food, and toilet paper. The goods will be distributed between the four American Legion posts in Ft. Myers, Lehigh Acres, Punta Gorda, and Pine Island.

American Legion Post 38 Commander Kevin Boyd said his post has aided communities hit by disaster all over the country but he never imagined it disaster would come to Southwest Florida.

“I mean this is truly amazing. Especially being that we took a Uhaul to Baton Rouge and we also took one to Kentucky not realizing that they would be returning the favor,” Boyd said. “We had a truck come in last Wednesday from Thunderbolt Georgia. Brought a whole bunch of stuff. Post 184 so you know it breaks your heart especially when I went downtown and seen downtown I was horrified. I couldn’t believe it. And Fort Myers beach is gone. There is no more beach. I never thought I’d experience that.”

“We started helping teachers and then we started to help the homeless and then we just decided to start helping veterans. I don’t feel like they get a lot of help,” Tiffany, an employee for Kids Helping Our Veterans said.

Before they finished unloading goods, more volunteers from the other posts were coming by to gather and distribute items.

Veterans of Foreign Wars are also collecting and distributing items for donation. Contact your local post if you would like to get involved.
