Five people are without a home after a generator short-circuited and caused a fire in Cape Coral.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 1700 block of SW Pine Island Road at around 9:45 p.m. on Friday.

The house was fully engulfed and surrounded by woods. There were no fire hydrants nearby, Cape Coral fire said, which meant they had to shuttle water to the site to put out the flames.

Cape Coral police blocked the eastbound lanes of Pine Island Road so firefighters could safely work.

Lee County Public Safety and Miami Fire Rescue provided medical assistance.

The home was deemed a total loss, but fortunately, no one was inside at the time, Cape Coral fire said.

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the woods.

The five people who live in the home all had a place to stay so the Red Cross was not needed.
