WINK News got a tour of FEMA’s direct lease units inside the Edison Grand in downtown Fort Myers. The empty units are being used for victims displaced by Hurricane Ian. First, an applicant’s home must be considered unlivable. Then they’ll need to file a claim with FEMA who will then determine whether housing is right for them. WINK News spoke with Keith Denning, the deputy federal coordinating officer. “We would like to be able to get more units, where this is a very comfortable option for families. And we really love to be able to place families into direct lease units like this. So we’d like to be able to obtain some more, but we’ve been very successful with this part of the direct housing program,” Denning said. FEMA is using several different buildings in Collier and Lee County to assist families in need. A one-bedroom at the Edison Grand typically goes for $1,750 per month.
