LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A 10-year-old Tampa boy was thrown from a car Sunday on I-75, just south of Alico Road.

Florida Highway Patrol reported the crash just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Video taken by a WINK News crew showed a SUV smashed along the highway. It appeared the SUV had rolled several times.

FHP said the car was headed north on I-75 when the tire blew, causing the driver to lose control. The car then slid into the median and rolled over the center cable barrier into the southbound lanes.

The 10-year-old was taken to Lee Memorial but later died of his injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Two other passengers were in the car. 55-year-old Roberto Lopez and 44-year-old Madelin Nunez were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Two southbound lanes were blocked for about two and a half hours Sunday afternoon.
