ST. LUCIE VILLAGE, Fla. (AP) – A pilot is dead after his single-engine plane crashed in a St. Lucie County neighborhood.

The Bedecrop BD-22 went down just before 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Lucie Village, less than a mile from the St. Lucie County International Airport.

The wreck caused a small fire in a home’s backyard, but St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said it escaped hitting any homes “only by the grace of God.”

Authorities said the pilot’s body was found about 200 yards from the plane. No one else was on board the plane.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has identified the pilot as 67-year-old Joseph Loney of Port St. Lucie.

Federal authorities are investigating the crash.
