Rip current cancels swim portion of Marco Island race

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. – Rough waters forced the Marco Island Triathlon to make some serious changes.

The race was being held at the Marco island Marriott. It typically comprises of a quarter mile swim, 15 mile bike ride, and a 5K run.

Things changed when the race director says a rip current made for treacherous conditions forcing her to cancel the swim portion.

“We had to make a last minute decision this morning once we saw the weather,” said Linda Gregory, race director for the Marco Island Triathlon. “We knew there were rip currents advisories out and we didn’t put them in the water just for safety.”

Other than the cancelled swim, race officials say everything ran smoothly. More than 400 athletes registered for the event.
