CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A 20-year-old man is behind bars for attempted murder.

Detectives arrested Alec Rivero for a shooting that took place on August 27.

Cape Coral police responded to the Cape Coral Hospital ER after two people were admitted with gunshot wounds, one with non-life-threatening injuries, and the other in critical condition.

Authorities say Rivero was driving back to Southwest Florida from Miami around 3 a.m., with the victims who fell asleep in the back of the car.

One of the victims woke up to Rivero searching through his pockets and pointing a gun, threatening to kill him. When the victim attempted to fight back, police say Rivero shot him multiple times.

The second victim woke up and found herself and the first victim covered in blood, and Rivero gone. She drove to Cape Coral Hospital where she realized she’d also been shot.

Cape Coral police arrested Rivero Thursday at a home on the 3200 block of NE 14th Place after several weeks of investigation.

Investigators say the incident was drug-related and additional charges are pending.
