Health officials warn Sanibel beachgoers of bacteria

SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla.- The Florida Department of Health is urging beachgoers to avoid swimming at Blind Pass Beach due to high levels of bacteria in the water.

Tests completed on Thursday show the water at the beach, located on Sanibel Captiva Road, has an elevated concentration of the enterococcus bacteria, which may be result of storm water runoff, pets, wildlife or sewage. Health officials say the bacteria can cause diarrhea and abdominal pain.

The advisory comes right at the unofficial start of tourist season. On Friday, some people left the beach disappointed after seeing the warning signs posted along the sand, while others found different ways to occupy themselves out of the water.

“Just waiting,” said Val Bungee, “I’m not going to swim.”

Meanwhile, some people waded right into the water.

“It doesn’t bother me, I’ve been going to the beach for over 30 years,” said Melissa Mullinax, “lot’s of red tides… I love the beach and love the water, doesn’t bother me.”

The water at the beach will be re-tested next week. For more information call, 239-274-2200 or go to lee.floridahealth.gov.
