CAPE CORAL, Fla. — While social media is a useful tool to connect and network, it can also be a nightmare.

One woman received a Facebook message from a person she didn’t know or was friends with, saying he was hired by someone to kill her.

The victim immediately filed a report with the Cape Coral Police Department, which is an action police recommend taking in this situation.

“They are making the suggestion they were hired to kill you and they will take payment from you instead to forget about it. That’s a scam,” said Lt. Dana Coston. “Report it to Facebook, whatever the social media outlet is, screen shot it and file a police report so that we can at least track that it’s occurring.”

These scams occur often and users should be careful about what is posted online, police said.
