FORT MYERS, Fla. A longstanding south Fort Myers driving range is no more but residents will soon say hello to something new.

The last set of balls has been sold at the Sun Cup Golf Center on Brookshire Lake Boulevard and construction has begun on a shopping plaza that will bring a Whole Foods and other stores to that location.

“I’m excited because of the food,” nearby resident Phil Gaither said. “I like the idea of having Whole Foods close by and I can literally walk here from my house now so that’s awesome.”

S.J. Collins Enterprises is building the Daniels Marketplace on Daniels Parkway and Six Mile Cypress Parkway. The developer plans to build the parking lot on the side of the property that faces Daniels Parkway.

“I think it’s going to help the property values and I think it’s going to help the area,” resident Donn Graham said. “I think they’ve done a good job planning it and I think we’re going to benefit from it in the long run.”

The roughly 140,000-square-foot neighborhood center is expected to open to the public in 2018.

Some of the expected businesses are:

  • Whole Foods
  • Mellow Mushroom
  • Panera Bread
  • Zoes Kitchen
  • Keke’s Breakfast Cafe
  • Banfield Pet Hospital
  • Pet People
  • Aveda
  • Venetian Nail Spa
