A Florida SouthWestern State College employee has been charged with stealing from the school.

The State Attorney’s Office says Lisa Ann Betz, 60, was the administrative assistant and coordinator of high school operations for the FSW Collegiate High School. The role meant she collected funds for various school events.

After she resigned, it was discovered by the school that over a 5-year period between 2014 and 2019, she had collected and failed to deposit more than $87,000, according to the SAO. She is also accused of depositing more than $70,000 in unexplained cash into her personal bank account during the same period. The investigation shows checks from school vendors were also deposited into her personal account.

The SAO says the investigation shows that Betz requested students pay cash only for various club accounts and required all payments be made directly to her. The club accounts were governed by the high school and college and neither had knowledge that the funds were being misappropriated, according to the SAO.

Betz was arrested Thursday and charged with grand theft and scheming to defraud. She remains in Lee County Jail. No bond has been set.
