Sarah Jean Mayher, 33. Credit: Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Florida Highway Patrol arrested a woman for a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a male pedestrian in the Iona area of Lee County Monday morning. According to FHP, troopers arrested Sarah Jean Mayher, 33, of Fort Myers Beach, in the afternoon after she left the scene of a crash in the SUV she was driving. Troopers went to the scene of the crash on San Carlos Boulevard at Kelly Road, where a 55-year-old man was seriously injured after being hit by another vehicle involved. According to the crash report, Mayher was traveling northbound on San Carlos Blvd. toward Kelly Road when a driver in a sedan was traveling southbound on San Carlos Blvd. toward the intersection. Mayher went to make a left turn through the intersection and hit the oncoming sedan, redirecting it toward the sidewalk where the pedestrian was standing. The sedan hit the man who was on the sidewalk, and investigators say Mayher went over and briefly spoke to him before picking up a piece of the front fender of the SUV she was driving and leaving the crash scene. “As she attempted to drive down the road, those parts came off, and basically, a first responder just followed the debris field and located that vehicle in that parking lot,” said Lt. Greg Bueno. The pedestrian was initially taken to the hospital to treat serious injuries. FHP says he is recovering. Mayher and the other driver, who stayed at the crash scene, were listed as having minor injuries. “Part of being a responsible driver is you must remain on scene if you were involved in a crash, and you were making a situation, which is bad already… you were making it a whole lot worse by leaving the scene, because now you’ve committed a crime,” Bueno said. The SUV Mayher was driving was impounded by investigators about a quarter-mile from the crash on Majestic Palms Boulevard, and Mahyher was also found near Majestic Palms Blvd. and arrested. Investigators say she had a marijuana pipe on her. Mayher faces charges for leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and leaving the scene of a crash with an injury. Mayher remains in the Lee County Jail. Bail has been set at $19,000. The Florida Highway Patrol no longer releases the names of those involved in crashes, citing Marsy’s Law.
