A 78-year-old man from Punta Gorda was killed in a crash on US-41 in Port Charlotte late Tuesday afternoon.

An SUV driven by a 62-year-old woman with the 78-year-old and a 53-year-old woman as passengers, all from Punta Gorda, was traveling south on US-41, approaching the intersection of Olean Boulevard, around 5:20 p.m. A van driven by a 36-year-old Port Charlotte woman with a 7-year-old girl as a passenger was traveling north on US-41, approaching the same intersection.

The SUV ran a red light as it turned left, pulling into the path of the van, leading the van to T-bone the SUV. The 78-year-old man was transported to Fawcett Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.

Florida Highway Patrol no longer releases the names of those involved in crashes, citing Marsy’s Law.
