Two workers were killed after a utility trench collapsed at a construction site near Burnt Store Road in Charlotte County on Monday.

“If it was your coworkers or family members no one wants to see that, that’s always hard,” Todd Dunn the public information officer for Charlotte County said.

Dunn says deputies arrived on the scene and jumped in to give one of the men CPR, but it was too late.

Dunn explained all the dirt that came crashing down is what likely crushed the victims. Dunn says, “The danger is anyone going in without shoring up the sides they can become the next victim and we don’t want that.”

It is reported that major crimes will take over once they finish pulling the body out.

Charlotte EMS reported a trench collapsed as crews were working to put in a water pipe along Burnt Store Road, north of Notre Dame Boulevard.

Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners says the pipe was being worked on as part of a water, wastewater and reclaimed water pipeline to serve the Tuckers Point development.

The Charlotte County Fire Department tells WINK News that Guymann Construction is the company involved with the site.
