Blue-green algae treatment is underway in North Fort Myers. BlueGreen Water Technologies, hired to remove it, promised results in 24 to 48 hours.

As of now, it is hard to say if their treatment is working. The hydrogen peroxide-based treatment was thrown on the water and was still present on Tuesday.

Footage from the WINK News drone shows that algae was still present on Tuesday. There are more chunks of blue which means the algae is dying.

Here’s how the treatment BlueGreen Water Technologies uses works. The company took a boat out on the water on Monday and spread their hydrogen peroxide-based treatment across the water. That is the white you see in the photo below. The algae dissolves and the solution stays on the surface.

Other areas of Little Lake Michigan Canal, which didn’t get the treatment, still have heavier blue-green algae blooms.

Right now, the county is monitoring the blooms and doesn’t have plans to treat other areas.
