Smoke was still in the air Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to keep a scrap yard fire contained at A&D Scrap Material off Cranford Avenue.

Firefighters have been on the scene since the fire broke out Tuesday afternoon.

Fort Myers Fire Chief Tracy McMillion says A&D Scrap will transfer material from the scrap yard into a dumpster.

Firefighters were still at the scrapyard pouring water onto the smoldering piles to ensure everything was contained.

The Fort Myers Fire Department closed Metro Parkway from Old Metro to Hanson Street so crews could work safely. Those roads have since reopened.

McMillion said a lot of his team was on the scene, and when the fire first started, it was a hot day, so they made sure everyone was safe while trying to take this fire down

“The number one thing is we always work together with all our partners, you know, with our public works utility, Salvation Army, Lee County EMS. One of the things that we did… there’s a Lee Tran bus which is air conditioned and opportunity to rotate crews so periodically come get rehab getting water, get food, check their vitals to make sure they’re doing well. And we can do that in a nice air-conditioned mobile bus.”

The fire department says the fire is contained. They are still investigating the cause of the fire.
