A man died in the hospital after a Monday night crash with a fuel tanker in south Fort Myers left him in critical condition.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 36-year-old man from Fort Myers was driving an SUV east on Daniels Parkway, approaching Fiddlesticks Boulevard around 11:15 p.m. An empty fuel tanker driven by a 47-year-old man from Port Charlotte was stopped in the outside lane of eastbound Daniels Parkway for a red traffic signal.

The SUV rear-ended the tanker, and the 36-year-old was not wearing his seatbelt. He sustained critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

On Tuesday morning, the man was declared dead at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

This crash is still under investigation.
