78-year-old motorcyclist dies in DeSoto County crash

A 78-year-old motorcyclist from Arcadia died in a crash Saturday evening on US-17.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcyclist was in the right lane heading North on US-17 just South of Hammock Road.

Meanwhile, a van, driven by a 33-year-old man from Oviedo, was in the left lane going North on US-17 also South of Hammock Road.

The motorcycle then veered onto the right shoulder. Quickly, the motorcyclist got back into the right lane.

Then, while trying to change lanes, the motorcyclist crashed into the front of the van.

The 78-year-old man was critically injured from the crash and later pronounced dead at the hospital.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
