Multiple units had to be evacuated after a fire at the Boardwalk Apartments on Deleon Street in Fort Myers.

Neighbors said the woman inside made it out safely and was taken away in an ambulance, but she was able to walk on her own.

People all around the complex ran outside when they saw the flames and smelled the smoke, some of them in nothing but bath towels.

One man, who is being hailed as a hero, ran inside the burning apartment to help the woman inside escape.

“He said that he couldn’t even get in there because the smoke was so bad,” said Kristie, neighbor and witness. “It was crazy. Like, it was huge, thick black smoke, and you could see the flames coming out of the roof.”

Neighbors who spoke with staff at this complex said the apartment is a total loss.

The man who lives in the apartment beneath the one that caught fire said he just has some water damage.

No word on the condition of other apartments, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
