Naples outfielder Garret Zech is one of several Southwest Florida baseball players expected to be chosen in this year’s MLB draft.

In fact, according to a local MLB scout, he might go the highest of any prospect in the area.

“We were contacted by scouts from at least 30 teams,” said Naples Head Baseball Coach George Reidy.

Zech had scouts drooling after he ran a 6.3 60-yard dash.

“He’s a tremendous athlete. Extremely fast. He’s as fast as anyone in the country,” said Reidy.

Local scouts say the Naples senior is a rare talent because of his combination of speed and size. At 6’1″ and 200 pounds, he’s a physical outfielder with power (five home runs), as well as speed (28 stolen bases).

Not to mention, he hit a cool .543 this season.

His athleticism was also apparent on the football field. Zech was Naples’ starting quarterback his junior year, before leaving the football field behind in order to focus on baseball his senior year.

When asked about Zech, the first thing Naples Head Football Coach Bill Kramer said was, “Speed. Raw Speed.”

Zech is projected to be drafted in the third to fifth round.
