School bus bursts into flames in Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – A school bus on its way to drop off students burst into flames Wednesday morning.

Sixteen students safely made it off the bus when the fire started. Authorities say no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials believe it was a mechanical failure in the engine.

Academy Transport owners say the school bus driver was in the middle of her route to Cape Prep and Fitness Academy when she smelled fumes and knew something was wrong.

She pulled over near the corner of SE 16th Place and SE 8th Terrace and immediately got all the kids off the bus. The kids ranged in age from kindergarten through 8th grade.

Hasan Almoumani captured it all on camera.

“It was a big fire, it was the biggest fire I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Almoumani says he was taking his daughter to school when he first came across the bus.

“The scary part, that the whole thing went up in flames in less than two minutes,” said Almoumani.

The students were taken to school once a relief bus arrived at the scene.

Officials say the bus is inspected every 30 days and the drivers also practice emergency drills twice a year.
