CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A crackdown by police on impaired driving landed seven people in jail.

During an operation Saturday night, officers arrested seven people for drugs, DUI and driving without a proper license.

Officers got a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation to reduce crashes related to impaired driving. The police department is spending $45,000 on things like increased patrols.

Cape Coral police say from 2012 through 2014, the city saw a 14 percent increase in traffic crashes. On average during that time period, in 40 percent of the traffic homicide investigations and serious bodily injuries, alcohol was a factor. Police say the total number of these types of crashes doubled from 2012 to 2014.

In 2014, CCPD says the city also saw the highest number of DUI arrests (203) occur between the hours of 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The police department will continue with checkpoints through September 30.
