CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) – A 12-year-old girl who was one of two people injured in separate shark attacks in the same North Carolina town has begun a series of surgeries as part of her recovery.

Dr. Bill Adamson, chief surgeon at UNC Children’s Hospital, issued a statement on the condition of Kiersten Yow. She was listed in good condition Thursday after she was attacked at Oak Island on June 14.

Adamson said the girl underwent two surgeries last week, and reconstructive surgery on Wednesday to treat a leg wound and for her elbow. He said reconstruction of the elbow would continue in upcoming weeks with surgical wound care and skin grafting on her arm.

Kiersten was attacked on the same day a 16-year-old boy was injured in a shark attack at the same beach.
