SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) – A bottlenose dolphin found stranded on a sandbar in Tampa Bay in September has died.

Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota reports that the adult male, named Feeny, died Sunday. A cause of death was to be determined.

Feeny arrived at the marine facility in critical condition Sept. 17. At the time, he was underweight and showed signs of infection, anemia, dehydration and pneumonia. Mote Marine staff provided intensive care and constant monitoring for the dolphin, who was estimated to be at least 30 years old.

The dolphin was found by a fisherman.

Feeny was first spotted in area waters in 1988. Scientists had seen him 32 times since in various places in Tampa Bay.
