BOSTON (AP) – An unseasonably mild December has shattered temperature records across the Northeast.

The National Weather Service says preliminary numbers as of Wednesday show the average temperature in Boston for the month was 45.4 degrees, or nearly 11 degrees above normal.

New York City; Burlington, Vermont; Concord, New Hampshire; and Portland, Maine, were all well above average.

In Providence, Rhode Island, the temperature reached 50 degrees on 21 days, breaking the previous record of 13 days.

Most people seemed to enjoy it. Mike Lydon, of Waltham, Massachusetts, said he got outside more than normal in December because he knows he’s soon going to be cooped up indoors by the cold.

Temperatures returned to more normal ranges late in the month, and are expected to stay there into January.
