Two pit bulls got loose in Cape Coral Tuesday and killed a neighbor’s pet.

A man called 911 after seeing the two dogs running without their owners in their neighborhood, and was worried about kids and other animals nearby.

The man who called says he is keeping an even closer eye on his pets after today’s attack.

“We were going around the neighborhood making sure people were inside and everything so they didn’t get bit for whatever reason,” said James Fitzsimmons who saw the dogs while they were out. “Some people shouldn’t have dogs but also accidents happen you just gotta watch your dogs.”

A report from the Lee County Animal Services says the family was getting ready for work and school when the animals tore up their lanai at 8:00 a.m. this morning and killed their daughter’s pet rat which was kept in a cage near their house.

The dog’s owner told Animal Services that she left a gate open and that’s how the dogs got out. Now, the pit bulls are back home.

Animal Control gave the owner of the pit bulls a written violation.
