A five-vehicle pileup in Port Charlotte Saturday afternoon has left one man with critical injuries.

Charles Caputo, 45, is in critical condition following the crash on Veterans Blvd and Atwater St. in Port Charlotte. He was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital. The Punta Gorda man was driving an Oldsmobile Delta 88 near 4 p.m. Saturday.

Caputo was traveling on the outside lane of Veterans Blvd. with a Chevy Silverado, Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Titan and Lexus RX350 stopped at a red light on the outside lane of westbound Veteran’s Blvd. and Atwater St.

The Oldsmobile approached the stopped vehicles from behind and failed to stop, according to the Florida Highway Patrol press release. The Oldsmobile propelled into the back of the Chevy, which caused a chain reaction with the vehicles in front of it.
