Authorities are investigating a shooting in Charlotte County.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, 59-year-old Laura K. Sergeant shot a man multiple times, killing him before she committed suicide.

Sergeant called 911 and said she just shot a man multiple times and was planning on taking her own life. Shortly after, while still on the phone, a shot was heard over the phone.

The male victim was confirmed to be dead at the scene; however, Sergeant was alive but suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sergeant was transported to a local hospital and later passed away.

“There’s two individuals involved, female called dispatch on herself stating that she had just shot the man multiple times and that she was threatening to shoot herself,” said Claudette Smith the Charlotte County Sheriff’s public information officer. “Later after that dispatch heard the firearm go off, and that’s when she shot herself.”

This has been deemed as an isolated domestic incident, the couple lived at their home on Swaying Palm Drive.

“At this time, we have a very active crime scene,” Smith said. “They’re doing the search warrant and crime scene is inside taking pictures, doing video processing the scene getting all the evidence.”

WINK News learned this isn’t the first incident for the people that were inside the home.

“There was only one incident related to these individuals at this home. And that was back in January for verbal dispute,” Smith said. “So there was no multiple calls to this home or anything. But the public is there not in any danger.”

The sheriff’s office said they wouldn’t identify the male victim due to Marcy’s Law.
