A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for a large area on the eastern side of Sanibel.

The Island Water Association says residents living in the area east of Tarpon Bay Road, all the way to Lighthouse Beach, are under the boil advisory.

The water company says the notice resulted from a large-diameter water main on Periwinkle Way that sustained damage during bridge repairs. That damage caused a loss in pressure in the pipes further down the line.

Residents in the area under the boil notice are asked to boil their water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing their teeth, or washing dishes.

The boil notice will remain in effect until repairs are made and the water has been tested and cleared as safe to drink.
