A motorcyclist was killed in a Thursday afternoon crash on Old Burnt Store Road in Cape Coral.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, a 70-year-old Cape Coral woman was driving a 2023 Hyundai Kona southbound on Old Burnt Store Road South, approaching the intersection of Southwest 1st Street around noon. She stopped in the center median waiting for northbound traffic to clear for a left turn onto Southwest 1st Street.

58-year-old Cape Coral man Ion Dumitru was driving his 2007 Yamaha XVS11M motorcycle northbound on Old Burnt Store Road South, approaching the intersection of Southwest 1st Street.

The woman driving the Hyundai told CCPD she thought northbound traffic had cleared, so she turned left by crossing the northbound travel lane and never saw the motorcycle approaching. Dumitru braked heavily and skidded around 91 feet. He steered right to avoid impact but was unable to do so.

The front bumper of the Hyundai struck the left side of the motorcycle, spinning it counterclockwise and overturning it on its right side. Dumitru was thrown off and landed around 51 feet north of the crash.

Although life-saving measures were attempted, Dumitru was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hyundai driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and an ambulance took her to the hospital.

CCPD says alcohol/drugs were not factors in this crash, nor was speed.
