Former USF player killed in Ybor City stabbing

TAMPA- A former USF football player was killed  and another victim has non-life threatening injuries after they were stabbed in a parking lot outside of The Orpheum in Ybor City around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Tampa police say that the incident stemmed from a altercation outside of The Orpheum.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the nightclub was hosting an “official” after-party following the FAMU-USF football game at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday.

In a statement released by the USF Athletic Department Sunday afternoon, the school publicly disavowed the post-game party and did not sponsor the event at the nightclub.

The fight was in the vicinity of 19th Street and 7th Avenue when an unknown suspect or suspects stabbed the two victims.

TPD released the identities of the two victims. Elkino Watson, 23, was fatally wounded. Desmond Horne, 22, is listed in stable condition at a local hospital. Both men were from the Miami area.

Watson was a former defensive lineman for the University of South Florida until 2014.

He was invited to participate in the Chicago Bears during their 2015 training camp but was cut in August.

According to USF Associate Athletic Director for Communications Brian Siegrist, Watson wanted to continue his football career either in the Canadian Football League or the Arena League.

Detectives are asking for anyone with information on the stabbings to call Crime Stoppers Tampa Bay at 800-873-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online.
