KANO, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian police say two women suicide bombers blew themselves up at the entrance to a busy market in Nigeria’s second city of Kano, killing themselves and three other people.

The death toll could be higher. Witnesses who spoke on condition of for fear of repercussions say they counted at least 20 bodies.

Wednesday’s twin bombings come the day after a night attack by a suicide bomber killed 34 people and wounded 80 in the northeastern city of Yola.

Officials blamed the attacks on Boko Haram Islamic extremists.

Hundreds of people have died in bomb attacks in Kano, including at the same cellphone market targeted Wednesday, though the northern city is far from the Islamic uprising’s main theater of operations in the northeast.

Some 20,000 people have been killed in the 6-year-old Islamic uprising that has spread to neighboring countries.
