Sixth lawsuit filed in connection to Club Blu shooting

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A man whose jaw was shattered by gunfire in the Club Blu mass shooting has filed suit against the club, alleging negligence, documents reveal.

He joins five others taking legal action in the wake of the violence that killed two and wounded 18 shortly after midnight July 25. Two of the lawsuits, including one from the family of a 14-year-old boy who died in the shooting, were filed earlier this week.

“It’s my understanding that the club had been warned about three days before that a shooting may happen at the club,” said Fort Myers attorney Joe North, who’s representing Settles as well as the family of Stef’an Strawder, the 18-year-old killed in the shooting.

Settles became one of the most well-known victims of the shooting when he posted on Facebook from the hospital just hours after he was shot, with a video depicting him on a ventilator and a message saying he didn’t want to die.

Settles posted to Facebook again on Friday with more optimistic news indicating that he’ll be released from the hospital soon.

He’s expected to make a full recovery after undergoing surgery.

The owners of Club Blu declined comment.
