A Fort Myers man was sentenced to life in prison for attempted second-degree murder.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, Bacilio Antemate Xolo, 43, of Fort Myers was sentenced to life in prison for attempted murder and 5 years in prison, the maximum, on each of four counts of child abuse.

Xolo was found guilty in July, following a trial in Lee County.

On November 19, 2019, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to an apartment complex after getting reports of a shooting. When they arrived they found the victim, a woman, who had a gunshot wound to the face, standing outside an apartment with several children, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, deputies were gathering information and a witness pointed to Xolo and said he did it. Xolo was nearby with blood on his shoes.

Xolo made a statement saying that he had been arguing with the victim prior to the shooting. He shot her in the cheek, in front of the children. He told detectives he threw the gun in the water, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

Divers from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office retrieved the gun from the pond behind the apartment complex.
