COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Collier County Commissioner Georgia Hiller is standing by some members of the Hispanic community who are calling for Commissioner Tom Henning’s resignation.

“I can completely understand why his constituency is very upset and unnerved by what he did,” said Commissioner Hiller. “They’re completely justified in their sentiments.”

Earlier this month, Commissioner Henning lead the charge for the commission to vote on closing the farmer’s market at the Golden Gate Community Center temporarily, without putting it on the agenda.  That meant the public did not have an opportunity to comment.

“It was unfair,” said Commissioner Hiller.  “It was unreasonable and goes against all the principles we stand for in America.”

The controversy started more than a month ago when Commissioner Henning called the farmer’s market a “gypsy” business.

In a statement to WINK News, Commissioner Henning said about the calls for his resignation,
“It’s not even worth a comment. There’s nothing unlawful I’ve done.”

Commissioner Hiller says she wants to make it a rule that the public has to be notified about an item on the agenda before they vote on it.
